Is Your Highlight As Good As Your Game?
College coaches are busy. And you are one of many athletes who want to meet with them. Its important that you use their time wisely. You need to present yourself, and yourself alone. Listing yourself in a site directory with hundreds even thousands of other athletes is a real distraction does not help your chances of getting noticed.
You want to get meetings with college coaches, so that when you visit, that coach already knows you have the ability to play at that level, and that you have a decent chance academically to get into that college or university. With that out of the way, the meeting is simplified to letting that coach assess your attitude and character. These are the final decision points for that coach to recommend that you be invited to commit.
Here are some of the things that coach is wondering about you from across the desk:
In this process we want you to play well.
Send a tight video presentation from your game film and tell your whole story as a person, an athlete and a student. DVD’s get lost or damaged. That coach won’t find you in an unedited video clip, or miss a key moment. If a coach specifically asks to see unedited game footage, send some, But send a tight highlight too. We are here to do that production work for you.
A VidSportTV Playercast page, with a custom Pro Highlight from your game video is the way to stand out. Share a link to your personal Playercast URL directly with any coach. They will appreciate the quality, and you will get more coach meetings.

With version 2 of the VidsportTV site it is now possible to invite fans into your Team Room so that they can watch your games free on demand. Here are the steps:
Step 1
Invite fans into your Team Room by using the Admin tab on your Manage Account page. Enter the email of all fans people you want to invite and click “Send Invite.” You may invite as many as you like.
Step 2
Now give your fans access to videos in your Team Room. As a coach, you have the ability to control which videos fans have access to. Click the “Manage Playlists” button which will open up a new inset titled Manage Playlists. This is where you control what playlists a selected video will appear under.
Step 3
In the Manage Playlist inset you can add a playlist designed specifically for your fans. Do this by clicking the “Add Playlist” button. You can call it whatever you want or choice to give fans access to a playlist you have already created. For the purpose of this demonstration I have added a playlist called “fans.” Click the box that says assign to add a video to that playlist.
Step 4
Once you have the playlist created you want to click the “Manage Playlist Access” link. This is where you control who has access to your videos. Select “All Fans” which gives all of the people you have invited into your Team Room as a fan access to that specific playlist. You can also assign playlists to select athletes and fans.
During my time as Director of Athletics at a college preparatory school on the East Coast, I had many parents approach me feeling overwhelmed by the recruiting process. One aspect every parent must remember is that the athlete has to take this particular bull by the horns and initiate communication with college coaches. You have spent your parenthood doing what you think is best to set your child up for success, so it’s natural to want to help! Key to remember in all this is that your role is to support your son or daughter, not take over the process. Here are some simple ways to do just that:
Make sure the athlete does the talking and communicating. If you have been shouldering the communication with college coaches, you are doing your child a disservice. A Division I college lacrosse coach once told me, “I’m not going to be working with the parents, I’m coaching the student, and I want to know he can speak for himself.”
The same Division I coach recounted a story in which he asked an athlete to email him updated GPA and SAT scores. He soon began to receive eloquent, mature emails from the athlete’s email address. The tone of the email was very different from previous communication between the coach and the young athlete. You guessed it; the father had been emailing the coach from his son’s email account!
In your attempt to help your child, remember not to overstep your boundaries. Your child has to be able to communicate with the coach, and respond to his or her requests in a timely manner – trust me, there will be much more of that to follow as a collegiate athlete!
For teams with the resources to use a software coaching tool like Gamebreaker, this powerful system can actually be more beneficial to the coaching staff than the athlete. Why? Because Gamebreaker is essentially a video editing tool that stores video cut-ups on a laptop. Analysis systems like Gamebreaker are difficult to share with the extended team without the need to get into a room and beam the video on the wall.
The VidSport Team Room complements a system like Gamebreaker by simply exporting your Gamebreaker files for upload into a Team Room account. That way, you can add ThoughtSpot annotations to the clips you’ve already edited out of an overall game, and they become immediately available to your athletes, online from any browser.
Kevin Rich, the Assistant Coach for ECAC West hockey powerhouse Manhattanville, does just that. We walked Kevin through the process via one of the many service webinars we run at the request of our clients.

Here’s what Kevin has to say about working with VidSport:
“I think the cornerstone of any product/service is the support behind it. Not being the most computer efficient person, I was able to work with Ander at VidsportTV instantly, and he’s the CEO! To see that someone at that level in the company has a role in working with the average customer was comforting. Ander and others have spoken over the phone with me, as well as conducted service webinars several times. The free exchange of questions and ideas has improved both of our experiences. My personal experience with VidSportTV has been one of the best, and I look forward to seeing what lies ahead for this evolving product.”

Camps! Part 2
Okay…camps discussion #2. If you haven’t read my earlier post regarding this matter, it may be beneficial. Quick review, we are discussing the “I Want to Play at the Next Level” Camper, this is the athlete who is considering attending camps for the express purpose of having their skills assessed by professionals. So, is attendance at camps beneficial for this type of camper? Well, yes, no, maybe. Not a great answer, I know.
But we need to look further into the stages where individuals may fall on the recruit continuum. (I am writing this from the perspective that the camper will be attending the camps the summer before their signing period. There are so many different NCAA signing periods that I have to give a general frame of reference.)
“The All American”: You have multiple scholarship offers from multiple Division 1 schools.
This case is the rarity, and I won’t spend a lot of time on it. But, if you are fortunate enough to be one of these individuals, congratulations. Attendance at camps is not necessary for you to receive the offers that you want. Always remember that the offers are only “verbal offers” until you sign your letter of intent. Be smart with your actions and enjoy the attention you will receive from the coaches.
“Have Some, Want More”: You have some scholarship offers, but there are schools on your list that have not offered you anything…yet.
You will probably need to attend multiple camps. If you still have targeted schools that have not offered you, then you need to attend those camps. Also, if you have offers from other schools, you may want to make a campus visit (either official or unofficial) to those schools, but not participate in their camp. After all, they have already offered you. This way you can show the coaches you are still interested, but also be conservative with your resources, i.e. money and energy.
“The Middle of the Road – er”: You have good interest from schools, but they are telling you that you need to come to their campus in order for them to make you an offer.
Good luck and put your traveling shoes on. This is a “good news” / “bad news” situation. The good news is you have impressed the coaches, and they want a firsthand look at your skills. This also probably means that you will be part of the pre-camp screening process and that the coaches will be keeping an extra sharp eye on you. (Coaches typically make lists before the start of camp with “players to watch”.) However, the bad news of this situation is you are in a true tryout mode. You will need to go to the camps and perform at a high level, and you will probably need to attend multiple camps. But hey, the coaches are giving you a very good opportunity to impress them.
“The I Want This Very Badly, Will Someone Notice Me”: You have a great desire and passion to play at the next level, but you have not generated the type of interest that you would like. Two thoughts quickly come to mind:
1) You need to market yourself before you attend camps. (VidSport can help you do this.) You need to get your information (highlight video, academic materials, and bio sheet) into the coaches hands before the start of camp.
2) Unless you have an unlimited budget and energy reserves, you need to be selective in camp choices. The pre-camp marketing will give you an idea of the interest level that may be out there for you. Coaches will respond to the information that you send to them. The coaches and programs that show you the most interest would be good choices for camps to attend. After all, if they are responding to your pre-camp marketing efforts, then they are showing a true interest in you!

At the bottom of your Team Room page, below the video player, is a tab titled “Admin”. This tab has Invite and Email tools for Coaches or Account Owners only. “Admin” controls Team Member access, monitors Latest Activity (meaning you can see when a team member last signed onto the site) and has tools for quick email communication to your Team.

The Admin Tab
To get started with the Admin features, first enter your team members’ email addresses in the “Invite Team Members” text box. Once you have entered all email addresses for your players and coaches, click the “Invite Teammate” button and an email will be sent to your teammate(s) inviting them to register and log into your Team Room. Team Members have free access to your Team Room for the duration of your account subscription. Once you have done this, all members you invited will appear in the Admin table. If a player or coach does not respond to the invite, you will see the remark “Not Registered” in the “Latest Activity” column. In order to log in and view the videos in your Team Room, all members must register. Once players and coaches are registered, the “Latest Activity” column tells you when each member last logged into the Team Room – so you can see who has been reviewing the video you wanted the team to watch -and who hasn’t!
In this table you can also control who has ThoughtSpot uploading, annotating and diagraming access to the videos in your Team Room. If you want your assistant coaches to have access to upload, diagram and annotate video, simply click “Yes” in the drop down box next to his or her name in the “Can Edit” column.
